UMLILO AND WHYT LYON CELEBRATE HOMO-EROTICA IN FIERCE ‘DL BOI’ MUSIC VIDEO

Queer expression is usually seldomly represented in well-known main-stream South African tradition. Avant-garde music artists Umlilo and Whyt Lyon (from Put Crew) have joined causes to break this cultural chafing and inject it using their catchy, homo-erotic dance monitor – “DL Boi”. The duo have elicited the aid of some of Joburg’s fiercest unorthodox talent to create a dance music video extravaganza.

The crowd-funded music video for DL Boi is written, performed and produced by Umilo and Whyt Lyon. Directed simply by Jono Kay, the video celebrities renowned international performers and choreographers Llewellyn Lulubelle Mnguni and Henk Opperman. World stylist/designer Caroline Olavarrieta added an eclectic fashion turn to the video with Orli Oh Meiri and Dylosaurus_Rex’s make-up expertise. Shot within a nostalgic 80s/90s ballroom design, the video follows a DL Boi’s pursuit of an charming seductress at an unorthodox Ball. DL Boi or perhaps down low brother identifies a subculture where a closeted gay man frequents singular spaces in order to meet and hook up with other queers. The cat and mouse video game of desire is outlined through a saucy dance interchange choreographed by Llewellyn Mnguni and Henk Opperman.

“It’s an exploration of the many difficulties of being queer in the S. africa and the world. You obtaining small glimpse of the world all of us inhabit as queer persons in all its wonder, beauty and glory. The reality is it is often hard for queer people to go to town in many parts of the world which in turn feeds into a repressive and toxic patriachal world, ” said Umlilo and Whyt Lyon. “We sometimes need to hide a real part of ourself because of lack of acceptance via society and the fear and violence on queer body. This video celebrates the advantage of queer bodies, expression of desire and most importantly permission. ”

Umlilo and Whyt Lyon (from Stash Crew) are excited to share this kind of collaborative club anthem that fuses live electronic kwaai beats with future take sensibilities.

Bio:
Umlilo and Whyt Lyon (STASH CREW) are two South African-american afro-future gender and genre-bending avant-garde acts that came collectively for a queer-galactic collaboration 2 yrs ago. They fuse friendly electronic future kwaai music with political insight, hiphop, kwaito, dance and incongruous pop sensibilities. The two ground-breaking acts have completed effective tours in Europe, South usa, Cape Town and Johannesburg South Africa in 2017. In 2017 they performed around hip-hop superstar Mykki Finalidad as part of ID Magazine‘s skin flick about queer artists in Johannesburg. The documentary is definitely titled Out of This Globe.
