5 First Date Fashion Tips

Let’s talk a bit about, probably, one of the most stressful moments on the dating scene, and not only the gay one for that matter – the first date. So, you eventually matched on Tinder and managed to find a schedule that will suit you both, and you’re super excited about going to see this fellow. However, this is not the time to tell you how to behave, but what to wear, as this tends to be a problem that not many people talk about. You know firsthand how it is when someone dresses inappropriately for an occasion, so you really don’t want to make any mistakes. After all, we gays tend to judge everything, so let’s take a look at these five tips and give them less to judge us about:

Give yourself some time

Clothes can say a lot about people, but first of all, don’t stress (yes, we know – it’s easier said than done). Since you’ll definitely be more and more nervous as THE moment is approaching, it would be best not to leave everything for the last minute. That is why you should think about your outfit a couple of days before the actual date. You won’t, of course, take the clothes out of the closet and put them on your bed this early – but it’s best to plan the outfit in your head. That way, you will be able to change it if you see something that matches better with your shoes or the jeans that you’re about to wear. You can also get a haircut a couple of days prior – that way you will be fresh, but you won’t give the impression that you got the haircut just for the date. It could seem a bit desperate.

Dress to impress

Even though it’s very important to bring your best game on, make sure that you keep it your style. You definitely don’t want to experiment with your look for your first date. For example, if you like to dress smart and you do it often, getting new tailored suits in Melbourne and other cities for the occasion might be a good idea – just make sure that they’re well-fitted. If your style is sporty, there is a plethora of ways of impressing your new (hopefully) partner, such as going shopping for the trendiest pieces of clothing there are. Which brings us over to the next tip:

Don’t overdo it

Being fashionable is, of course, quite important – but there is a fine line between fashionable and simply too much. If you want to choose a bold piece of clothing, such as a neon T-shirt or colorful pants, make sure to choose something minimalistic with it. You definitely don’t want to look like a clown, and – hey! It’s 2018, the year of minimalism! Choose your accessories carefully as well – for example, a good watch is a must, but don’t go with any hats or caps for the night.

Learn from your past mistakes

Think about the past – have any guys smoothly tried to point out certain fashion mistakes you’ve been making? If yes, now’s the time to think twice. Perhaps the shirt that you used to wear with your ex doesn’t look good on you regardless of how much you love it. Then again, you can use these mistakes for conversation starters – bad first dates and the fashion choices can bring a couple of laughs to the table, just make sure that you don’t end up talking bad things about your previous partner; that’s never a good idea on the first date.

Ask for help

If you feel like you need extra help in this department, don’t be shy to ask your friends, or the people you are close with whose style you admire. The best option would be to ask that one friend of yours who’s a fashionista (we all have one) about their opinion. Sometimes this can be quite helpful, as you will get insight from a third person, which can more often than not be quite different from your own.

Did we cover everything? We’re pretty sure we did. Just try to be handsome as always, but not too extravagant or eccentric. You can leave that for some other time. If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask someone (or us!) Good luck!
