Britney Spears Being Honored For Support Of LGBTQ Community
Pop star Britney Spears has been very vocal about her support for the LGBTQ community over the years, and advocacy group GLAAD will celebrate and honor her support at the 29th annual GLAAD Media Awards ceremony on April 12th in Beverly Hills, CA. Spears will soon be the recipient of the GLAAD Vanguard Award, which is awarded to media personalities who continuously promote equality and acceptance of the LGBTQ community. Past award winners include other notable celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg, Elizabeth Taylor and Jennifer Lopez.
According to Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD, she was quoted in Billboard as stating,” She is a force in the music world who has used her global platform to share messages of love and acceptance, something that the world needs today more than ever.”
It’s no surprise that Spears is getting this recognition, given her music has been a staple at gay clubs ever since she first started making music back in the late-1990s. Spears has used social media as her platform to encourage, support and stand up for the gay and transgender community, having done so for many years. The songstress and performer has spoken out against LGBTQ bullying, and opposed many bills against the LGBTQ community, including those in Texas that aim to restrict transgender rights. Spears has also lent her time in a musical tribute that honors the victims of the horrific 2016 mass shooting in a gay nightclub in Orlando, FL, back in 2016.
Back in November, Spears was one of the A-list performers who appeared in Brazilian singer Yann’s video for “Iqual,” which is supposed to be a song of love and a manifesto against violence of Brazil’s LGBTQ community. She was featured along side others like Diplo, Demi Lovato, Celine Dion and more, with proceeds donated to an organization that helps the LGBTQ community down in Brazil.
There was also that time that she brought fans together by toasting a gay couple who met at the opening of her Las Vegas residency and got married. She created a congratulatory video for them and even signed their marriage license during a meet-and-greet!
Last year, she publically wrote an open “love letter” in Billboard to the community that demonstrated her love. The letter stated how, “Your stories are what inspire me, bring me joy, and make my sons strive to better people.”
