These days, 40 is the new 30! Instead of feeling old, gay men in their 40 are full of life more than ever, allowing them to think and feel young. But even though they might not think that they’re old, their body might tell them otherwise. The older we get, it’s just harder to stay fit…that’s just nature. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be done; it’ll just take some more work than when you were in your 20s or 30s. To help you achieve optimum fitness results, here are some tips on how to stay fit and fabulous for gay men over 40!
- Ditch cardio
Cardio is great and all, but you’ll want to ditch long hours on the treadmill or doing cardio. At this age, there is little benefit to excessive cardio that’s more than 45 minutes at a time. And doing too much cardio can actually be harmful to your health. When you do too much cardio, your body can enter a catabolic state (when your tissue starts to break down), create excess cortisol (the stress hormone), and more!
- Work on your flexibility
As you get older, you start to loose flexibility, so maintaining it is important to your fitness and overall health. To increase your flexibility as you age, try doing yoga or foam rolling so that you decrease your chance of injuries when trying to stay active.
- Strength train
You lose muscle mass as you get older, so strength training is essential when you’re over 40. Even if you’ve never done it before, now is a great time to start! Strength training won’t just help you maintain your body’s muscle mass, but will also help with building bone density, help with joint pain and improve your blood sugar levels.
- Focus on your core
Core exercises that focus on your mid section will help you get tighter around the stomach area and help with balance and posture. Try doing plank variations to strengthen your posterior muscle groups!
- Get your steps in
Get moving by trying to hit 10,000 steps a day! This should be an addition to your regular fitness regime and will keep your body fit well into your 40s and 50s.
